Transnuclear Wins Doe Hanford FFTF Fuel Storage Award

Transnuclear, Inc. (TN) announced today that it has won a competitive procurement to supply 22 Interim Storage Casks (ISCs) for the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) at the DOE Hanford site. The contract, with Fluor Hanford, calls for delivery of the 22 casks in FY 2004 and 2005. The casks will be used to complete the defueling of the shutdown FFTF reactor in support of the overall decommissioning of the facility.

In announcing the award, Bill Gallo, TN Senior Vice President and General Manager of Western Operations, stated "We are very pleased to have this opportunity to continue our successful record of spent fuel package supply to the DOE complex." He noted that TN has supplied the TN-BRP, TN-REG, TN-FSV, MCO Cask, and 125-B packages for spent fuel transport, as well as the NUHOMS® 12T dry storage system, which houses the TMI-2 damaged core at INEEL.

Transnuclear President and CEO Alan S. Hanson added, “This order strengthens our position in the decommissioning services sector. TN has been contracted to provide defueling packages at Rancho Seco, San Onofre, and INEEL. TN is also the Prime Contractor for Dominion Nuclear Connecticut's Millstone 1 decommissioning activities. We look forward to supporting the decommissioning of FFTF."

This project also marks TN's first vertical concrete SNF storage fabrication project. TN is well known for supplying the horizontal concrete dual-purpose NUHOMS® dry spent fuel storage system. Transnuclear, Inc., with headquarters in Hawthorne, NY, is a member Cogema’s international Transnuclear Group of companies founded by Cogema Logistics (formerly Transnucleaire, SA) of Paris, France. The company, which was incorporated in the United States in 1965, and its subsidiaries supply engineering products and services for the transport and storage of radioactive materials.
