Transnuclear Awarded Fleet-Wide Contract for Dry Storage by Progress Energy

Transnuclear, Inc. announced today that it won a fleet-wide contract from Progress Energy for supply of a new generation NUHOMS® dry storage system for storage of spent fuel at three nuclear plants including H.B. Robinson, Brunswick, and Crystal River.

Under terms of the agreement, Transnuclear will supply the newly designed NUHOMS®-24PTH spent fuel storage canisters and the high heat load HSM-H storage modules to H.B Robinson starting in 2004. The NUHOMS® -24PTH is an advanced design for storage and transportation of 24 high burnup fuel with cooling times as low as 3 years.

The thermal capacity of the system exceeds 40 kilowatts per canister, allowing users maximum flexibility in placing the hottest fuel assemblies in the center of the basket to maximize shielding and maintain doses ALARA. An application for amendment 8 to the NUHOMS® Certificate of Compliance 1004, to add this new canister, was submitted to the U.S. NRC earlier this month. Transnuclear will also supply an upgraded version of the NUHOMS®-61BT with increased burnup and heat load capacity to the Brunswick Nuclear Plant starting in 2007. An amendment application for the NUHOMS®-61BT is scheduled for submittal in mid 2004.

In announcing the order, Transnuclear President and CEO Alan S. Hanson said, “We are pleased that Progress Energy has selected TN and the NUHOMS® technology to dry store fuel across their fleet. We look forward to working as a team with Progress Energy to successfully implement the ISFSI projects at each site.”

As of today, there are 213 NUHOMS® canisters in operation storing over 5500 spent fuel assemblies at ISFSIs in the US. With the addition of the Progress Energy fleet, Transnuclear’s dry storage systems will be used at 20 ISFSIs serving 32 nuclear reactors. Transnuclear, Inc., with headquarters in Hawthorne, NY, and offices in Fremont, CA, and Tacoma, WA, is a wholly owned subsidiary of COGEMA and part of the AREVA group of companies, a world leading nuclear technology company. Transnuclear, which was incorporated in the United States in 1965, supplies engineering products and services for the transport and storage of radioactive materials.
