NUHOMS® 24PTH Dry Shielded Canister
The NUHOMS®-24PTH is the latest high decay heat Transportable DSC its containment boundary consists of a stainless steel outer shell with two top and two bottom seal welded cover plates to ensure 100% reliable confinement for the NUHOMS 40 year design life and beyond. The DSC has shielding at both ends to provide low exposure rates during canister sealing operations and during the storage campaign. The NUHOMS® 24PTH DSC incorporates a innovative "egg crate" basket design that maximizes heat conduction and produces a highly rigid basket structure to withstand the most severe transportation accident scenarios. The "egg crate" design also simplifies fabrication and reduces the cost of manufacturing the DSC.
The fuel compartments transfer the mechanized loads to the canister shell, via transition rails. The transition rails distribute the mechanical loads from the fuel compartment grid to the DSC shell, and also provide a thermal conduction path for heat transfer from the basket to the shell, making it efficient in rejecting heat from its payload. Once loaded with fuel, the DSC is drained, vacuum dried, and backfilled with pure helium to provide an inert environment for the fuel and basket components during storage. Transuclear submitted amendment 8 to COC 1004 for NRC approval. First fuel load at HB Robinson loaded 30 kW with only 250 mRem of occupational exposure.
