NUHOMS® OS197 Cask
This is an on site transfer cask. It is a robust overpack which provides physical protection, shielding, and means to handle a dry shielded canister during fuel transfer operations from the pool to an on site ISFSI. The OS197 cask transfers both a PWR and BWR canisters and has been deployed at numerous sites in the U.S.
The NUHOMS® OS197 transfer cask is made primarily of stainless steel and incorporates gamma and neutron shielding materials. The exterior shell has a highly polished surface finish to facilitate decontamination. The transfer cask has a 197-inch-long cavity. The transfer cask is constructed from two concentric cylindrical steel shells with a bolted top cover plate and a welded bottom end assembly. The annulus formed by these two shells is filled with cast lead to provide gamma shielding. The transfer cask also includes an outer stainless steel jacket, which is filled with water for neutron shielding. The top and bottom end assemblies incorporate a solid neutron shield material. The transfer cask is designed to provide sufficient shielding to ensure that dose rates are ALARA. The shell materials are resistant to corrosion and are not susceptible to galvanic reactions.
Advantages:
Robust and capable of withstanding the most severe accident conditions |
Future unloading is done without any crane lifts and independent of plant facilities |
Flexible configuration which allows for increased concrete section thickness to enhance shielding |
The massive HSMs are never moved during DSC transfer operation |
HSMs are close packed for maximum shielding at the ISFSI |
Prefabricated and delivered to the ISFSI. No on site concrete construction with NUHOMS |
