NUHOMS® 52B Dry Shielded Canister
The NUHOMS®-52B DSC is a first generation NUHOMS® BWR canister and the first dry storage system to be loaded with BWR fuel in the U.S. The DSC is constructed out of a stainless steel outer shell and is double seal welded to ensure 100% reliable confinement for the NUHOMS® 40 year design life and beyond. The DSC has shielding at both ends to provide low exposure rates during canister sealing operations and during the storage campaign. Borated steel plates are captured within a spacer-disc and support rod structure that makes up the basket assembly. Once loaded with fuel, the DSC is drained, vacuum dried, and backfilled with pure helium to provide an inert environment for the fuel and basket components during storage.
