NUHOMS® HD 32PTH Dry Shielded Canister

The NUHOMS®-32PTH Transportable DSC is a new generation DSC designed for high burn up fuel with low cooling time. The DSC is constructed from a stainless steel outer shell and is double seal welded to ensure 100% reliable confinement for the NUHOMS® 40 year design life and beyond. The DSC has shielding at both ends to provide low exposure rates during canister sealing operations and during the storage campaign. The NUHOMS® 32PTH DSC have a diameter which is two inches larger than the standard NUHOMS® canisters. The 32PTH incorporates the new "egg crate" basket design used in the 24PTH with 8 additional fuel compartments for increased capacity. The space between the inside diameter of the DSC shell and the fuel compartment grid assembly is bridged by "transition rails". The fuel compartment plates transfer the spent fuel loads to the canister shell, via the transition rails. The transition rails distribute the mechanical loads from the fuel compartment grid to the DSC shell, and also provide a thermal conduction path for heat transfer from the basket to the shell, making it efficient in rejecting heat from its payload. Once loaded with fuel, the DSC is drained, vacuum dried, and backfilled with pure helium to provide an inert environment for the fuel and basket components during storage. First fuel loading expected in 2007.
