NUHOMS® Horizontal Storage Module (HSM)
HSMs are highly modular and expandable pre-cast concrete structures designed for the long-term storage of DSCs. The HSM surrounds the DSC with massive reinforced concrete which provides the spent fuel with the highest level of physical protection and radiological shielding. The HSM is ventilated, allowing air to enter the module through the bottom vents, flow around the DSC, and exit through the top vents. The completely passive cooling of the DSC is one of many safety features of the NUHOMS® system. The HSM is equipped with hardened stainless steel rails that provide the sliding surface for the DSC during loading and unloading operations. The simple and safe horizontal transfer is achieved without ever lifting the DSC. (HSM Animation)
